Review - Friday the 13th

First off, Friday the 13th is a difficult film for some movie fans to approach. An epic debate could break out (and indeed has) whether remakes and/or re-imagining films should exist.

The main thing that stood out to me in this movie is the high level of comedy that it has. In many ways this movie is one of extremes. Comedy versus terror. Most of the male characters in this movie are constantly being used to say & do funny stuff. It is funny and I did laugh a lot. But the question comes up: “Should this movie even have comic things in it?” That’s a question only indivdual people can answer for themselves. The comedy in this film does tend to push this movie more into the same genre of more recent horror films (i.e. Scream). That being said this is probably the best Jason I can remember seeing. He is scary. You don’t laugh when you see him.

It is difficult to rate this movie. Different people have different biases based on their point of view. If you are diehard fan of the original Friday the 13th movies you may have negative feelings about the new one without even seeing it. But then again this isn’t a remake. The story is completely different than the originals (I say originals-plural, because this draws from the first 3 movies). I like the idea of re-imaginings much better than remakes. Although I am concerned that a possibility of a pre-quel could happen now which would be essentially a remake of the original 1980 film. But we’ll see what happens there.

The rating I’m giving this can definitely spark some debate but here it is…

Friday the 13th – Go Now (especially if you don’t mind comic stuff. If you do, then I’m not sure…)
